A WORD ABOUT ‘SHANKS’

The Dreaded Hosel Hits

1Shank‘- My fellow golfers you will agree that ‘SHANK’ is one of the most dreaded word to hear in golf. Even some golfers go to the extent that they immediately ask their fellow friends to change the topic πŸ˜‚ because they consider it an extremely infectious shot. There is no doubt that shank shots are the most dreaded and dangerous in golf.

” TO BE BEST AT ANYTHING IN LIFE or GOLF , IT’S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO BEAT YOUR REMOTEST FEAR OUT BEFORE IT START BEATING YOU WITH ITS OWN PACE &TIME πŸ‘ŠπŸ‘ŠπŸŒοΈπŸŒοΈ

Let us prepare to beat this fear out of us. Stay on this page till the end and i can assure you that you will be a winner of this less habitatted and inadequately explored area. To begin with, it’s prudent to understand this type of shot to avoid their reoccurances, even though most golfers will cringe at the word. Take a note of the pictorial image below for your easy understanding of the club face πŸ‘‡

Anatomy of Club Face

2. How does SHANKS Occur ?

” A shank is the result of hitting the ball with the hosel instead of the club face and shoot off at a sharp angles in omnidirection. The hosel is the part of the club that attaches the club head to the shaft. The image below will give you some visual clarity on its source of occurrence.

The Source of unpredictable Results

3. What does SHANK do to the Golfers?

– It immediately make you look like a beginner at Golf.

– It tumbles down Self-Confidence from Top floor to a Ground floor.

– It immediately promote a tendency to hit FAT shots(i.e behind the ball) in order to lift the golf ball up in the air.

– It create doubt on your acquired Skills and shake up your belief in your own golfing capability.

Golfers will agree that it is Probably more infectious than COVID-19 because it infects merely by talking about it…πŸ˜€

4. Now, there must be a question in your mind as to why should I know about it ? OR may be – Mujhe iss ke baree mai baat hi nahi karni hai..etc. etc. Although, I agree and care for your sentiments but my sole aim is make you aware fully about this dreadful shot. This will inspire confidence & build capability in you to FIX it on to the go (OTG).

5. Essentially, Shanks are the product of improper swing path. As you bring the club back down toward impact, sometimes you start pushing the club head away from your body and abruptly stop at impact. This unsynchronized movement expose the heel of the club which translates into hostel hits and ball veer off to the right of the intended target.

6. How do i correct Shank on the go ?

Solution – If this is an all too familiar occurrence for you then don’t worry. Nearly every golfer has experienced a shanks during his or her golfing days. The good news is that it can be iron out or easily correctable.

FIRSTLY make sure that you are neither standing too far nor too close to the ball in your address position. Whenever you Stand too Close to the ball , it will promote you to create a space between your hands & body inorder to hit the ball. This action will push the club head outwardly in the swing path thereby give more exposure of the hosel to the ball.

SECONDLY if you will stand too far away from the golf ball , it will promote an action of overreach and will push your body weight towards the golf ball. This action flattens the club head shaft and provide an instant exposure of hosel to the ball despite the fact that fact that club is swung from the inside path.

THIRDLY Do not strech your hands/arms too much at impact. This might pushes the club head outside the swing path and will expose the hosel of the club to the golf ball.

7. OTG Solution for Surviving SHANKS :-

The time tested On The Go Solution is extremely simple to find Quick FiX to it. Just do the following :-

(a) Recheck & Ensure that the DISTANCE between the golf ball and yourself at address is appropriate.

(b) Make sure that you swing the golf club Loosely & Unhurriedly. Do stop at Impact and complete your follow through.

## I call it – RDSL Drill πŸ‘† ( Recheck Distance & Swing Loose).

However , If Shank still persist, then do this :-πŸ‘‡

Address the ball from the Hostel Side

Address the ball from the Hostel of the club head keeping everything else in the address same and make a rhythmic swing . There are 99.9% chances that you would not hit Shank. However after completion of the round, do not forget to hit the golf range and iron out this tendency.

8. My Few Favourites Drills :πŸ‘‡

HYDRO-DRILL ( My all-time Favourite)

(a) HYDRO-DRILL – In this drill you keep a 1/4th filled water bottle about 9 inces ahead and outside the target line and make swings to iron out the Shank. After 10 successful shot , reward youself with a one sip of water from the bottle. Bythe time you will drink all the water, you would have mastered the art of Surviving the Shanks.

HEAD-COVER DRILL ( Swing-Path Refiner)

(b) HEADCOVER -DRILL – In this drill you keep a headcover of your Woods just outside the target line next to the golf ball. Make swings at the ball and you will be good to go. This drill is one of my favourite drill to refine my Swing-Path.

TEE-PEG DRILL ( Confidence Builder)

(c) TEE-PEG DRILL – In this drill you make a Track on TEE’s just outside the target line next to the golf ball. Make swings at the ball and you are on way o conquer the SHANKS. I often refer this one as a Confidence builder.
